Tempers flared at the start of Cincinnati Bengals training camp on Wednesday when wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase became involved in a scuffle with defensive players.
Multiple videos captured the heated exchange between Chase and teammates, including defensive backs DJ Turner II and Jalen Davis. The confrontation escalated to the point where Chase was seen emerging from a group of players with another teammate's helmet, which reporter Jaron May identified as Davis'. Chase then threw the helmet away from the pile.
The receiver continued to exchange words with his teammates as wide receiver Colbie Young attempted to intervene. Davis briefly squared up with Chase before a Bengals coaching staff member stepped between them and pushed Chase away. Another coach then escorted Davis from the immediate area.
Quarterback Joe Burrow commented on the incident afterward, suggesting that such competitive intensity is expected between top players like Chase and Turner. "Those two are two of the best in the league and they’re going to be going at it every day," Burrow said. "Whatever those guys need to get excited to get better, go ahead and do it."
While Burrow acknowledged he doesn't favor practice interruptions, he added, "if you can punch somebody in the face in about 15-20 seconds and get back lined up, that’s probably ideal."
Cincinnati fans will look for this intensity to translate positively onto the field when the Bengals begin their season in September, as the team allowed the third-most points in the NFL over the past two seasons.
