Benfica Dominates Celtic 4-1 in Europa League Clash
Celtic struggles on the road, falling significantly behind in the first half and unable to recover.
Celtic's return to Lisbon proved to be a difficult one as they suffered a comprehensive 4-1 defeat to Benfica in the Europa League. The Scottish side found themselves three goals down by halftime at the Estadio da Luz, with Jhon Duran opening the scoring from the penalty spot in the fifth minute.
Benfica extended their lead in the 23rd minute when Alexander Bah finished unmarked after a cross from Gianluca Prestianni. The home side added a third goal in the 36th minute, with Duran scoring his second of the match.
Despite a spirited second-half performance from Celtic, which saw Camilo Duran pull a goal back with a header in the hour mark, Benfica sealed their victory with a late fourth goal from Vangelis Pavlidis. Celtic had chances to narrow the deficit further in the second half, with Camilo Duran and Kasper Hogh both striking the woodwork.
Celtic manager Martin O'Neill had made several changes to the team, including starting Auston Trusty and Dane Murray in defense, and Oliver Sorensen in midfield. Camilo Duran, Kasper Hogh, and Sebastian Tounekti formed the attacking front three. Benfica, managed by Marco Silva, fielded a strong team despite some rotations, featuring players like Georgiy Sudakov, Joao Palhinha, Dodi Lukebakio, Gianluca Prestianni, and Clement Lenglet. Notably absent for Benfica was their leading scorer Vangelis Pavlidis, though he did feature as a substitute.
The defeat leaves Celtic in a precarious position in the Europa League, with manager O'Neill facing questions about his team's performances in Europe. The focus now shifts to their domestic fixture against Hearts at Parkhead on Sunday.
