Tensions flared between the Detroit Tigers and Seattle Mariners on Wednesday night at T-Mobile Park, culminating in a bench-clearing incident in the eighth inning. The confrontation followed a game where five players were hit by pitches, leading to the ejections of Mariners reliever Drew Speier and manager Dan Wilson.
The incident escalated when Speier hit Tigers batter Gleyber Torres with a pitch. Prior to that, Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh had been struck in the bottom of the seventh inning. In total, four Tigers players were hit by pitches during the game. Mariners starter Bryan Woo became the first MLB pitcher since 2022 to pitch seven scoreless innings while also hitting three batters.
Following the pitch that hit Torres, he and Raleigh engaged in a heated exchange before Tigers manager AJ Hinch intervened. There was no physical altercation between players.
Torres suggested that lingering tension from a contentious series in April may have contributed to the emotions running high. During that earlier series, Mariners first baseman Josh Naylor was hit by a pitch from Keider Montero. This incident occurred after Naylor's forceful slide into second base and an apparent exchange with catcher Dillon Dingler.
"I really believe whatever happened at home with Naylor and everything, I think they just got feelings before," Torres said. "But this is baseball, and I don’t have any issues. Like I said, they protect Raleigh, and that’s what it is. I’m good."
Tigers manager AJ Hinch acknowledged the charged atmosphere. "I think the back-to-back pitches in a weird spot to Gleyber, one of them smoking him, created a lot of emotions," Hinch stated. "We all end up on the field, umpires met and deemed it intentional enough to throw him out. I know it came right after Cal got smoked, which is what makes it a little uncomfortable for everybody."
The Tigers and Mariners were scheduled to conclude their series on Thursday afternoon. Framber Valdez was slated to start for Detroit.
