A tense scene unfolded Sunday afternoon at Progressive Field when the benches cleared between the Cleveland Guardians and Arizona Diamondbacks during a rain delay. The incident occurred in the top of the sixth inning as Guardians pitcher Gavin Williams was in the midst of throwing a perfect game.

Williams had retired all 15 batters he faced, striking out 10, when Diamondbacks center fielder Tim Tawa attempted to bunt on an 0-1 pitch. The bunt attempt went foul, leading to an exchange of words between Tawa and Guardians catcher Patrick Bailey. On the following pitch, Tawa lined a single into right field, ending Williams' perfect-game bid.

Shortly after, a wild pitch occurred, and as heavy rain began to fall, forcing a stoppage in play, the two teams' benches and bullpens emptied. Guardians manager Stephen Vogt was seen approaching the Diamondbacks players before the tarp could be fully secured on the field. Players and coaches from both sides gathered near home plate as grounds crews worked to cover the infield. Heated words were exchanged, but no physical altercations were reported.

The dispute appeared to be rooted in baseball's unwritten rules, which dictate that bunting against a pitcher on a no-hitter or perfect game is considered poor sportsmanship by some. Others argue that batters have the right to hit in any manner they choose. This situation echoed a July 9 game, where Royce Lewis also showed bunt before singling against Williams, spoiling another perfect-game attempt.

The game resumed after the delay, with the Guardians ultimately winning 5-0. The Diamondbacks managed only two hits in the contest.
