Jude Bellingham has found a greater sense of freedom in his role at Real Madrid under manager Jose Mourinho, a system that allows him to influence the game more effectively and connect midfield with the forwards.
Bellingham explained in an interview with Real Madrid TV that he feels empowered to "decide when to drop back, when to stay up or when to get into the box," which he believes is his optimal position. While Mourinho still emphasizes pressing and possession recovery, the starting point for this work has shifted. Instead of retreating deep into his own penalty area, Bellingham can now expend his energy pressing opponents higher up the pitch.
This tactical adjustment means that when Real Madrid wins possession, Bellingham is already in a more advanced position, closer to the attacking players. This proximity allows him to more seamlessly link the midfield to the attack and provide an additional option for combining with teammates like Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior.
Mourinho has been vocal about the importance of team dynamics, stating that the "team dynamic is about 11, not 2+9," highlighting the need for collective effort over individual brilliance. This philosophy appears to be integrated into Bellingham's understanding of his role.
Describing his experience working with Mourinho as a "dream," Bellingham noted that he had only met the manager once prior to his appointment. A mutual understanding and respect seem to have quickly developed between the two. Mourinho has frequently spoken of Bellingham's significance to his plans, calling him a "unique and super important player" with exceptional physical, mental, and tactical qualities. He has even suggested that Bellingham should be considered among the contenders for the Ballon d'Or award.
"He is a unique kind of player and extremely important for the team," Mourinho said. "His mental strength, tactical ability, the way he recovers the ball, the way he pressures, the way he plays up front, I am very happy."
