Chicago Bears third-round wide receiver Zavion Thomas announced his arrival in the NFL with a spectacular 97-yard touchdown on his very first play during a preseason game against the Tennessee Titans.
Thomas, a former Mississippi State and LSU player, found himself open after a double move on his defender. Quarterback Tyson Bagent delivered the pass, and Thomas ran it all the way for the score, beginning the game with immediate impact. "I think that was Zavion Thomas' very first play in the NFL, so greatest start in NFL history," Bagent commented after the game, according to the team's website.
Thomas concluded his preseason debut with a total of five receptions for 140 yards and one touchdown. He also contributed on special teams, gaining 22 yards on kick returns and 39 yards on punt returns. "It felt amazing," Thomas said. "Just the preparation (I) put into it, it's something I expected. I appreciate my teammates and also thank God for the opportunity."
Thomas is currently projected to be the second wide receiver on the Bears' depth chart, behind Kalif Raymond. The team also features Luther Burden III and Rome Odunze as targets for quarterback Caleb Williams.
If Thomas continues to perform at this level, he could provide a significant receiving option for the Bears' offense throughout the season.
