Bears Kicker's Viral Attempt to Trip Packers Receiver Sparks Debate

A late-half incident during the Week 5 matchup between the Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Bears has become a talking point, following Packers receiver Matthew Golden's collision with a Bears coach on the sideline and Bears kicker Cairo Santos' subsequent attempt to trip Golden.

The sequence unfolded when Golden, after fielding a punt and running out of bounds on the Chicago sideline, crashed into an unsuspecting coach. Video of the hit quickly circulated online. As Golden re-entered the field, Santos appeared to attempt to trip the receiver. Though unsuccessful, the entire exchange, from the hit on the coach to Santos' move, went viral.

Social media discussions ignited over which action was more unsportsmanlike, with fan bases predictably aligning with their respective teams. Neither Golden nor Santos drew a penalty flag on the plays.

Following the game, Golden acknowledged Santos' attempt to trip him but maintained a measured response, stating, "Yeah, he did. He did. But it’s all good. I ain’t got nothing to say to him." Golden, a first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, had a career-high 123 receiving yards in the game, including a 50-yard reception.

While Golden took a diplomatic approach, some of his teammates were more critical. Linebacker Zaire Franklin alluded to comments made by Bears receiver Luther Burden III prior to the game, suggesting Burden had "quit today."

The Packers secured a 31-7 victory over the Bears. This result places the Minnesota Vikings atop the NFC North at 5-0, with the Packers, Bears, and Detroit Lions all holding 3-2 records after Week 5. The two divisional rivals are scheduled to meet again on Christmas Day in Chicago.
