Bayern Munich Insiders Concerned Over Vincent Kompany's Workload Before Collapse
New reports indicate club personnel noted the manager's intense schedule and lack of rest in the weeks leading up to his hospitalization.
Bayern Munich insiders had voiced concerns about manager Vincent Kompany's work habits and well-being in the weeks preceding his collapse at the club's training ground, according to a new report.
Kompany, 40, was taken to the hospital on Friday after collapsing while observing a training session for the second team. This incident occurred shortly after he had led the first team's training session in preparation for their Bundesliga match against Freiburg. The training session was subsequently abandoned, with those present reportedly deeply affected.
The former Manchester City captain has been contending with a viral infection that has exacerbated issues with old scar tissue in his hip, leading to pain and difficulty with mobility, such as climbing stairs. Kompany is reported to be in stable condition.
According to German newspaper BILD, figures within Bayern Munich had observed the Belgian's intense "workaholic" tendencies, noting a poor work-life balance. These observations included insufficient sleep, irregular eating habits, minimal exercise, excessive coffee consumption, and an overwhelming workload.
Kompany himself acknowledged not listening to his body while managing his viral infection. "As a coach, you always want to do everything," he was quoted as saying. "I caught a pretty nasty virus last week, and of course, I didn't listen to my body, and then at some point, my body just said: 'That's enough!'"
Kompany has been deeply involved in Bayern Munich's football operations, reportedly driving initiatives such as the installation of privacy screens at the training ground to prevent external observation of sessions. Assistant coach Aaron Danks is expected to manage training and match operations in Kompany's absence. Danks remarked that encouraging Kompany to rest would be a challenge, describing him as a "true leader and works hard," but emphasizing the need for rest due to his virus.
The incident occurred about 20 minutes into the reserve team's training session, which Kompany was observing with new coach Dante. While most players had returned to the changing rooms, witnesses were shaken. The reserve team's match on Saturday against DJK Vilzing has been called off.
Bayern Munich issued a statement confirming Kompany's medical treatment following his collapse and assuring that he would undergo thorough examination and receive ongoing medical care. The club's sporting director, Max Eberl, emphasized Kompany's health as the utmost priority and pledged full support for his recovery. The coaching staff will temporarily assume Kompany's duties.
Kompany's former club, Manchester City, extended well wishes for a speedy recovery. Kompany captained City during a highly successful period, though he was also frequently sidelined by injuries.
Since moving to Munich in 2024, Kompany has guided Bayern to two Bundesliga titles, with Harry Kane as his key player. He is married to Carla, whom he met in Manchester, and they have three children.
Kompany's struggle with his viral infection had been a topic of discussion prior to Bayern's Champions League match on Wednesday. His assistant coach, Aaron Danks, had previously stated that the virus had affected Kompany's legs, causing pain and necessitating rest, though acknowledged the difficulty in getting Kompany to take time off.
Bayern Munich currently leads the German Bundesliga standings and holds a position in the Champions League league phase.
