Barcola Nets Hat-Trick as Liverpool Thrash LASK in Europa League
French forward scores three goals to answer pre-match doubts and lead Liverpool to a dominant victory.
Bradley Barcola scored his first career hat-trick on his 238th appearance for club and country, leading Liverpool to a resounding 6-3 victory over LASK in the Europa League. The performance came after manager Andoni Iraola had publicly backed both Barcola and teammate Florian Wirtz amid questions about their form and price tags.
Iraola expressed his satisfaction with Barcola's performance, stating, "I'm really happy for Bradley. You were asking me yesterday about him not making the numbers and [the same with] Florian and I think both of them today played really, really well. I think they made a difference." He added that the hat-trick would be beneficial for Barcola's confidence and help him feel the team's trust.
Liverpool dominated the first half against the Austrian Bundesliga champions, establishing a three-goal lead. The team registered 19 shots before halftime, the most by any team in the first half of a Champions League away match since the 2003-04 season. While Liverpool conceded three goals in the second half after the hour mark, the game was largely decided by then.
Florian Wirtz also contributed to the win with an assist, delivering a strong performance in Linz. Other notable contributions included a goal and two assists from full-back Jeremie Frimpong, and two assists from Kostas Tsimikas. Ronald Araujo scored his first goal for the club since joining in the summer, and Lewis Koumas also found the back of the net. Koumas, at 21 years and 25 days old, became the youngest player to score and assist in a Champions League match for Liverpool, surpassing Steven Gerrard's record from 2001.
Despite the comfortable win, the match was against an LASK side that had been winless in their last four games. Stephen Warnock, speaking on 5 Live, noted the passive nature of large periods of the game and suggested that a sterner test would come in their upcoming Premier League fixture against Brentford, who are fourth in the table and unbeaten in the league. The focus will now shift to whether Barcola can replicate his European success in the Premier League, with a match against Brentford on Saturday.
Barcola will aim to carry this form into the domestic league, starting with the visit to Brentford. Iraola indicated that Barcola had been feeling lively in training leading up to the match, and the team had a sense he was in a good place to perform.
"He has to enjoy this [as] to score a hat-trick in the Champions League is always very difficult," Iraola said. "Even yesterday in training, I could feel he was very lively. Sometimes you feel these things [are going to happen]. We were feeling he was in a good place going into the game."
