Barcola Hat-Trick Inspires Liverpool's Dominant European Win
New signing Bradley Barcola scores three goals as Liverpool defeats LASK 6-3 in a confidence-boosting European performance.
Liverpool secured a resounding 6-3 victory over LASK in Linz, with new signing Bradley Barcola netting a hat-trick in a performance that injected much-needed confidence into the squad.
Manager Andoni Iraola praised both Barcola and Florian Wirtz after the match, highlighting their significant contributions. "I am really happy for Bradley, because you were asking me yesterday about him, not getting the numbers, also Florian, and both of them today played really, really well," Iraola stated. "They made a difference."
Barcola opened his Liverpool account with three goals, while Lewis Koumas also scored his first of the season. The attacking display saw Liverpool score three times in the first 16 minutes, with Ronald Araujo's header initiating the rout. The victory was seen as a way to shake off any lingering effects from a previous heavy defeat to Manchester City and prepare for upcoming league fixtures against Brentford, Brighton, and Arsenal.
"For their confidence for sure, it's very good. I think they feel now that we trust them a lot," Iraola added regarding Barcola and Wirtz. "Bradley has to enjoy this. To score a hat-trick in the Champions League is always very difficult."
While the performance was impressive, the focus now shifts to replicating this form in the league. The team also saw contributions from Jeremie Frimpong, who scored one and assisted two, and Kostas Tsimikas, who provided two assists. Youngster Lewis Koumas also found the net for the first time this season.
Iraola was able to rest key players, with Virgil van Dijk starting on the bench for the first time in a significant European or league match since September 2023. He did, however, come on to captain the side for his 200th appearance.
Despite LASK scoring three late goals, the attacking fluency displayed by Liverpool was a significant positive. Iraola acknowledged that there are still minor issues to address but expressed optimism about the team's offensive capabilities.
