Barcelona has finalized the signing of Borussia Dortmund forward Karim Adeyemi for a transfer fee that could reach €31 million (£26.5 million). The 24-year-old Adeyemi, who can play on the wing or as a striker, becomes Barcelona's second summer acquisition, following Anthony Gordon's arrival from Newcastle.

Adeyemi scored 36 goals and provided 25 assists in 146 appearances for Dortmund. However, his tenure was marked by inconsistency, never exceeding seven goals in a single Bundesliga season across his four years with the club. Adeyemi, whose contract was set to expire next summer, had previously been linked with Manchester United. He will reunite with Barcelona manager Hansi Flick, who gave him his international debut for Germany.

The transfer to Spain is seen as a significant setback for Marcus Rashford. The English forward had been hopeful of making his loan deal permanent at Barcelona after a strong performance last season. Barcelona held an option to sign Rashford for approximately £26 million in June, following his contribution of 14 goals and 14 assists in 26 starts, which helped the team secure the La Liga title and the Spanish Super Cup. However, the club opted to pursue Adeyemi instead.

The move is a blow for Marcus Rashford, who had hoped to make his loan deal permanent

Reports at the time suggested Barcelona's decision was influenced by Adeyemi's perceived superior defensive contributions compared to Rashford, with Rashford's defensive work rate cited as a weakness, along with their age difference. Several clubs, including Arsenal, Tottenham, and Real Madrid, have reportedly shown interest in Rashford, but his future remains uncertain.

Rashford's wage demands and his approaching 29th birthday in October are potential factors influencing transfer possibilities. He is now expected to return to Manchester United for pre-season training, with a possibility of being reintegrated into the first-team squad under manager Michael Carrick.

Last season, Adeyemi faced legal scrutiny and was fined €450,000 (£384,000) for possessing illegal weapons. He issued a public apology, expressing deep regret and acknowledging the incident as a significant mistake.

Following his transfer, Adeyemi expressed surprise at the move, stating, "I couldn't believe it to be honest because I know what I can do and the last season was not the best." He added, "I am really thankful for this opportunity. [Barcelona boss Hansi Flick] was a big stone in everything because he said 'I want you but I need you to give it all'. For me, this was really impressive. I am honoured and thankful for this."

Adeyemi spent four years at Borussia Dortmund, where he occasionally had disagreements with manager Niko Kovac. Dortmund's sporting director, Lars Ricken, thanked Adeyemi for his contributions and wished him well. Adeyemi has signed a five-year contract with Barcelona.
