Banton's Maiden Century Seals Series Win for England Over Sri Lanka
Tom Banton's career-best 126 and a strong all-around performance secured a dominant 223-run victory against Sri Lanka, concluding England's summer with a resounding series triumph.
Tom Banton achieved his first international century, scoring 126, as England concluded their summer with a commanding 223-run victory over Sri Lanka in the final match of the series. The dominant performance, which saw England post a formidable total, ensured a positive end to a challenging summer for the team.
England posted 355-7, with Banton being the standout performer. He faced 105 balls, hitting five sixes and numerous boundaries. Jordan Cox also contributed significantly with a quickfire 76 off 52 balls, deputizing effectively for the injured Jacob Bethell. Captain Harry Brook continued his strong form, adding 77 runs to the total.
Brook, who has led England to a third successive ODI series win, expressed satisfaction with the team's display. "I thought that was near perfect," Brook stated. "Everyone chipped in beautifully. We're building towards a squad where, if someone does go down, someone else can come in and perform. Coxy was exceptional, and I was really proud of the way Bants played."
In the chase, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 132. Sonny Baker took a crucial early wicket, and further wickets fell to Gus Atkinson and Jofra Archer. Liam Dawson finished with three wickets, effectively dismantling Sri Lanka's batting lineup. The target of 357 proved insurmountable for the visitors.
The series victory marks a positive conclusion for England, who had faced scrutiny following a recent batting collapse. Banton's century, in particular, provides a strong option for the ODI side as they look towards future tournaments. Despite the successful series win, experienced players Joe Root and Ben Duckett had less impact in this final match, with Root scoring 18 and Duckett dismissed for a duck. Root's recent struggles with leg-before-wicket dismissals continued.
Brook has now overseen 33 white-ball victories against 11 defeats since taking over captaincy last year, with England's T20 form particularly strong. This 50-over series win, however, signals progress in the longer format as well, with the upcoming World Cup in mind.
