Folarin Balogun has been omitted from AS Monaco's squad for the Conference League, a decision that follows his abrupt withdrawal from a proposed move to Everton on deadline day. The forward's future at the Ligue 1 club remains uncertain.
Monaco chief Oleg Petrov described the transfer saga, which also involved Chelsea and midfielder Lamine Camara, as a dynamic discussion typical of transfer window finales. Petrov stated that Monaco had a clear agreement with Everton for Balogun's transfer, with the player traveling for his medical examination. Concurrently, Chelsea had expressed interest in Camara.
Around mid-afternoon on deadline day, Chelsea intensified their pursuit of Camara, prompting Monaco to re-evaluate their position. However, Petrov explained that by 7 p.m., Everton raised concerns regarding Balogun's medical, which cast doubt on the deal. While discussions with Everton continued, Chelsea reportedly made another approach for Camara.
Around 10 p.m., Everton indicated readiness to proceed with the Balogun transfer after renegotiating terms. Upon receiving this information, Monaco informed Chelsea that a deal for Camara was no longer viable, as they did not wish to lose both players. Petrov emphasized that Monaco should not be unfairly characterized as the "bad guys" in the situation.
Despite the near completion of the move to Everton, Balogun ultimately decided against signing, reportedly citing discomfort with how the club handled concerns raised about his medical. He expressed feeling that his health had been questioned, making him unwilling to commit to a long-term contract.
Petrov indicated that Balogun could still depart for a league with an open transfer window. He also suggested that Camara might still secure a move to a different club in the future. Petrov expressed sympathy for both players involved in the complex transfer situations.
