Australian midfielder Cristian Volpato has reportedly tested positive for cocaine following two separate instances of being stopped for speeding in Sydney, according to news.com.au. The 22-year-old Sassuolo player was allegedly caught driving 109 km/h in a 60 km/h zone during the second stop.

Volpato, who was part of Australia's World Cup squad this summer, also underwent a breathalyzer test, which he reportedly passed. His driver's license has been suspended for six months as a result of the incidents.

It is understood that Volpato has denied using drugs and has since provided a negative result on an independent test. Football Australia has stated it is aware of the allegations and is in contact with the player, monitoring the situation and offering support.

Volpato played a significant role in Australia's World Cup campaign, starting three of the team's four matches. Australia advanced out of the group stage before being eliminated by Egypt in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw. Volpato previously represented Italy at youth levels before debuting for the Australian senior team last year. He has spent his club career in Italy, moving from Roma to Sassuolo in 2023, where he made 24 appearances, including 11 starts, scoring two goals and providing four assists in the previous season. Sassuolo is scheduled to begin their Serie A campaign on August 23 against Atalanta.
