Australia's Pace Attack and Steve Smith Dominate Day Three Against South Africa
Veteran bowlers Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, and Nathan Lyon, along with Steve Smith, put the tourists in a commanding position in the first Test.
Australia's experienced bowling quartet and the batting prowess of Steve Smith have asserted control over South Africa on day three of the first Test in Durban. The Australian pace attack, comprising Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, and Nathan Lyon, dismissed South Africa for 284. Cummins took three wickets, while Starc, Hazlewood, and Lyon each claimed two.
This performance by the four bowlers, who have played together for nine years, highlights their continued effectiveness. Collectively, they have amassed 607 wickets in Tests where they have all featured. This tally surpasses the record of England's bowling unit of James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Ben Stokes, and Moeen Ali, who took 415 wickets in 31 Tests together.
Despite discussions about the age of Australia's side and concerns over succession planning, the bowlers demonstrated their enduring quality. Starc, the oldest of the quicks at 37, is reportedly bowling at an average pace higher than in recent years and is achieving his most significant swing since 2015. The primary challenge for Australia remains keeping these key bowlers fit, as injuries have sidelined some of them in previous series.
Steve Smith also contributed to Australia's dominant day. Following a period where the batting line-up was bolstered by Matt Renshaw's efforts on the first two days, the bowlers seized control. Australia finished the day at 33-0, extending their lead over South Africa to 139 runs. With two days remaining in the Test, and despite play being halted early due to bad light, Australia is poised to press their advantage.
