Auston Trusty scored his first international goal for the United States men's national team (USMNT) in their 3-2 World Cup loss to Turkey on June 25, 2026. The goal came just 2 minutes and 30 seconds into the match, making it the second-fastest goal ever scored by the U.S. at a FIFA World Cup.

Sebastian Berhalter's corner kick found Trusty at the back post, where the defender took a touch and finished with his left foot. The stadium erupted, and Trusty celebrated by running toward the bench, a moment he described as a "full-circle moment" and a "dream come true."

Trusty became the first Philadelphia Union homegrown player to score in a FIFA World Cup. His journey in soccer began in suburban Philadelphia, where his family was deeply involved in the sport. Growing up, he was inspired by his older sister, who played for the United States women's youth national team, and served as her ball boy. He entered the Philadelphia Union's youth system in 2011 and climbed through the club's academy pipeline.

His professional career has seen him play for Arsenal, Birmingham City, Sheffield United, and most recently Celtic, where he celebrated a Scottish Premiership title. Trusty stated he "lives and breathes for corners" and was glad to capitalize on the opportunity.

The match concluded with a late goal for Turkey, securing a 3-2 victory in stoppage time. Trusty, who had sustained an ankle injury and hamstring cramps minutes prior, was unable to assist on defense during the final play. "I rolled my ankle pretty bad. At the same time my hamstring was cramping, but we had no subs so I had to stay in the game," Trusty said. "It’s just an unfortunate loss, but we have to keep going. We won the group. That’s a positive. We have to put this behind us and learn from it."

Despite the loss, Trusty's goal is noted as a significant moment in his career and in American soccer history, representing a World Cup dream realized for a player outside of the biggest stars. Auston Trusty gets tended to by a trainer after injuring his ankle in the USMNT's loss to Turkey.
