Auston Trusty scored his first international goal and first World Cup goal in the third minute of the U.S. men's national team's match against Turkey on Thursday. His wife, Emily, shared her reaction on social media, posting "Everything" to her Instagram story.
The goal, assisted by Sebastian Berhalter from a corner kick, gave the U.S. an early lead. It marked the second-fastest goal in U.S. World Cup history, trailing only Clint Dempsey's 30-second goal against Ghana in 2014. Trusty, a defender for Celtic FC, became the first Philadelphia Union homegrown player to score in a FIFA World Cup. The match, held on June 25, 2026, saw the U.S. field a different lineup as coach Mauricio Pochettino tested the team's depth. Despite the early lead, Turkey equalized less than seven minutes later and took the lead before halftime. The U.S. managed to tie the game at 2-2 in the second half with a goal from Berhalter, but Turkey secured a stoppage-time victory.
This game was strategically insignificant for both teams. The U.S. had already advanced to the knockout round as the group winner, while Turkey had been eliminated.
Trusty played through minor injuries during the game, rolling his ankle and experiencing hamstring cramps, but remained on the field to avoid using a substitution. The U.S. is scheduled to play Bosnia and Herzegovina on July 1.
