On the 47th anniversary of Thurman Munson’s death, New York Yankees catcher Austin Wells paid tribute to the late captain by wearing specially designed retro catching gear. The gear featured a burnt orange chest protector and shin guards, with Munson’s retired No. 15 emblazoned on the back. Additionally, Wells styled his goatee into a horseshoe mustache reminiscent of Munson’s.

Munson, a seven-time All-Star and the Yankees' captain, died in a plane crash on August 2, 1979. Wells expressed his admiration for Munson's leadership and passion.

"I just think what he meant to the team, his leadership ability and the fire he had behind the plate, leading his staff — obviously, he was an incredible player and team captain, so hard not to root for that guy," Wells said.

The tribute was conceived two years ago when Wells met Munson’s widow, Diana, and the idea was finalized last year. Wells collaborated with EvoShield to create the custom equipment, providing the company with a picture of Munson to achieve the vintage look.

"They pulled it off, and I thought it looked incredible," Wells stated.

Gerrit Cole, the Yankees' pitcher who worked with Wells during Sunday's game, appreciated the gesture. Cole, a noted historian of Yankees lore, called the tribute "great" and emphasized the importance of honoring past players and leaders.

"Any time we get to honor some of our great players, great leaders and great ambassadors in the organization and in the game in general, it’s really special. It’s great to bring some awareness to how great of a human being he was," Cole said.

In other team news, Giancarlo Stanton is scheduled for live batting practice sessions on Monday and Tuesday as he continues his recovery from a calf strain. Manager Aaron Boone noted that while Stanton has been hitting, the primary focus remains on his running progression, particularly base running, which has been a hurdle in his rehab.

Cody Bellinger is progressing well from a Grade 2 hamstring strain and is within the team's four-to-six-week recovery timeline. Boone reported that Bellinger has resumed running outside, hitting, and throwing, and expressed satisfaction with his progress.

David Bednar recorded a four-out save in Sunday's game, marking his eighth multi-inning relief appearance this season. Cole praised Bednar's contributions, calling him "a luxury to have."
