Los Angeles Lakers guard Austin Reaves has revealed the depth of his friendship with teammate Luka Doncic, describing the Slovenian star as one of his closest friends. The two guards, who are expected to lead the Lakers in the post-LeBron James era, maintain daily contact, with their conversations often extending to non-basketball topics like golf.
"He’s one of my best friends on this planet," Reaves said. "I talk to him almost every single day." Reaves added that Doncic frequently sends him videos of his golf swing seeking advice, though Reaves humorously notes he's "not a coach."
This developing camaraderie is seen as a significant asset for the Lakers as the franchise pivots towards a future centered on Doncic and Reaves. Reaves, who signed a four-year, $185 million extension, has established himself as a foundational player for the team. His relationship with Doncic is expected to foster cohesion as they assume greater responsibility.
Reaves indicated on a recent episode of the Dan Patrick Show that he, Doncic, coach JJ Redick, and president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka have been in close communication throughout the team's roster reshaping. He believes they share a similar competitive mindset and are focused on building a lasting legacy.
The on-court synergy between Doncic and Reaves is also noted. Doncic typically controls games with his strength, patience, and playmaking, while Reaves offers scoring ability with or without the ball, the capacity to attack closeouts, and secondary facilitation. Reaves has acknowledged Doncic's unique ability to manipulate game pace and create advantages.
Last season, the Lakers demonstrated promise when both guards were available, posting a 30-11 record in games where they both played. However, injuries prevented their partnership from being fully tested in the postseason. With LeBron James's departure, the onus is now squarely on Doncic and Reaves to determine the Lakers' success in the upcoming era.
