Atletico Madrid is reportedly the frontrunner to sign Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero, despite rival interest from Arsenal. The Premier League club is understood to have contacted Romero's agents to gauge the potential terms of a deal.
Tottenham, however, is reportedly unaware of Arsenal's interest and would be unwilling to sanction a transfer to their North London rivals. This development follows reports last month that Atletico had rekindled their pursuit of Romero, with Inter Milan also making their case.
Inter Milan has agreed to a £34 million fee with Tottenham for Romero, but personal terms have yet to be finalized. Atletico Madrid is working to facilitate player exits before submitting a formal bid. The Spanish club is in discussions to sell left-back Matteo Ruggeri to Aston Villa for approximately £19.7 million, and Nahuel Molina to Roma. The combined revenue from these sales is intended to fund a £30 million offer for Romero.
The 28-year-old central defender is permitted to leave Spurs for the right price, as the club has strengthened its defensive options during the current transfer window. The signings of Marcos Senesi on a free transfer and John Paul van Hecke for £52 million provide manager Roberto de Zerbi with significant depth in defense.
Arsenal, meanwhile, is seeking reinforcements at the back due to an anticipated long-term absence for William Saliba, who sustained a back injury during the World Cup. Despite this, the prospect of selling Romero to Arsenal is considered highly improbable by Tottenham fans and the club hierarchy.
Romero has been with Tottenham for five years, having joined from Atalanta. He was a key figure in Argentina's defense during their World Cup campaign, which saw them defeat England in the semi-finals before a final loss to Spain. Romero's departure from Tottenham could signal a move away from the Premier League, as he appears destined for a transfer abroad.
This is not the first time Romero's future at Spurs has been uncertain, particularly following the departure of manager Ange Postecoglou. He suffered a knee injury towards the end of last season, impacting the club's dramatic late-season run. Despite his injury, Romero recovered in time to represent Argentina. He also drew attention for his celebrations after Argentina's World Cup victory and for his actions towards U.S. President Donald Trump following the final match.
