Oakland Athletics prospect Ryan Lasko was hospitalized after a collision in the outfield Tuesday with teammate Devin Taylor. The incident occurred as both players attempted to dive for a ball hit into the gap, resulting in Lasko being down on the field for approximately 10 minutes. He was subsequently carted off and transported to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano.
Lasko is in stable condition following spinal decompression and stabilization surgery to address a C6-C7 vertebra fracture. According to initial reports, he currently has no feeling in the lower half of his body. Athletics manager Mark Kotsay stated that doctors have not definitively ruled out the possibility of regaining sensation.
"The positive in the statement from the doctor is that there is not a definitive statement saying he’s not going to regain feeling in his lower half," Kotsay said. "We send prayers to him, to his family, to his teammate and the team, really. This is a trying and emotional time for them. We need to be there to support them, and I know we are."
According to Kotsay, Athletics director of player development Ed Sprague traveled to Texas, where Lasko's family was present. Team members are also expected to visit Lasko to offer support.
Lasko, 24, was selected by the Athletics in the second round of the 2023 MLB Draft after playing at Rutgers University. He impressed the A's coaching staff with his defensive abilities during spring training earlier this year.
