Astros Players Express Frustration Over Fan Boos and Low Attendance
Houston's players were dismayed by jeers from the home crowd during their Game 1 loss to the White Sox, citing a need for support.
Houston Astros players have voiced their disappointment with the home crowd's reaction during their American League Wild Card Series Game 1 loss to the Chicago White Sox. Boos were heard from the stands, particularly as the White Sox took an early lead, leading to calls for support from the team.
"It’s extremely frustrating as a home player," Astros first baseman Christian Walker stated. "We’re here, playing at home; we need cheers. We need energy. We don’t need boos. What purpose does that serve in that moment? Whatever fans are feeling, we’re feeling it tenfold."
The team entered the postseason as the first-ever division winner with a .500 or worse record. Game 1 saw a noticeable number of empty seats at Daikin Park, with the announced attendance of 34,011 falling short of the ballpark's capacity of 40,963. The 4:10 p.m. local start time on a Tuesday may have contributed to the lower turnout.
Relief pitcher Bennett Sousa echoed Walker's sentiments, particularly after he struggled with control, spiking two breaking balls in the seventh inning, which drew boos. "This team has laid a lot on the line to be in this position to give the fans a playoff game – a playoff series. We want their support," Sousa said.
Despite an 81-81 regular season record, the Astros secured a spot in the playoffs, marking their ninth appearance in the last decade. During this period, the team has reached the World Series four times, winning in 2017 and 2022. However, their average attendance this season ranked 14th in the league, with just over 30,000 fans per game at Daikin Park.
The White Sox ultimately won Game 1 by a score of 6-3. The Astros will play Game 2 at 4 p.m. local time in Houston, with Hunter Brown scheduled to pitch against the White Sox's Sean Burke.
