Arthur Marshall, a former NFL wide receiver known for an unusual record and a five-year career with the Denver Broncos and New York Giants, has died at the age of 57. His death followed a battle with stomach cancer.
Marshall, a standout player for the University of Georgia, entered the NFL undrafted in 1992. He made the All-Rookie team and became a key receiver for the Broncos, also contributing as a kick returner. During his time with the Broncos, Marshall completed an 81-yard touchdown pass to Cedric Tillman, a play that remains tied for the longest pass completion by a non-quarterback in NFL history.
He was traded to the Giants in 1994 and played three seasons in New York before his NFL career concluded. Over his five seasons in the league, Marshall registered 87 receptions for 1,267 yards and four touchdowns.
Years after his football career, Marshall was sentenced in June 2010 to 69 months in prison after pleading guilty to bank fraud. An FBI investigation uncovered an elaborate scheme involving mortgage fraud that led to a 22-count indictment related to his real estate ventures. He was ordered to pay more than $3.6 million in restitution to his victims. Marshall expressed remorse in court, stating his intention to make amends.
Marshall's athletic journey began at Hephzibah High School in Georgia, where he was also recognized as Scholar Athlete of the Year. He was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame in 2023. Community members recalled his impact on and off the field, with his former high school coach noting Marshall's dedication and willingness to give back.
Despite facing a broken leg during his junior year at Georgia, Marshall returned to complete his college career, accumulating 65 receptions for 1,166 yards and four touchdowns.
