Arthur Fery Secures First Tour-Level Win Since August at Shanghai Masters

British No. 1 Arthur Fery achieved his first Tour-level victory since August with a decisive performance against veteran player Marin Cilic in the opening round of the Shanghai Masters.

Following a notable run to the Wimbledon final three months ago, Fery has experienced an inconsistent period on the court. This was punctuated by a strong showing at the Winston-Salem Open, but preceded and followed by early exits at the Cincinnati Masters and the US Open.

Fery's Asian swing began with a setback, as he was eliminated in the first round of the China Open by Portugal's Jaime Faria. However, in Shanghai, Fery demonstrated superior performance on serve against the former world No. 3. The 24-year-old Briton ultimately prevailed over Cilic in a first-set tiebreak before comfortably winning the second set, securing the match with a 7-6(2), 6-1 scoreline.

This victory represents new territory for Fery, who had won only one previous Masters match. He briefly showed signs of being flustered when contemplating his message on the camera lens, a customary act for match winners at major tournaments, before opting to simply write 'Shanghai (heart)'.

For Fery, every win is crucial for accumulating valuable ranking points as a tour newcomer with limited points to defend until next year's major championships. Currently ranked in the mid-30s, accumulating a few more wins before the season concludes could position him favorably for a seeded spot at the Australian Open next year.

Great Britain is also set to benefit from Fery's return to form. Following a strong performance against Ecuador last month, the British team secured its place in the Davis Cup Final 8, scheduled for late November in Bologna. There, Fery and his teammates will compete against Germany, led by the soon-to-be world No. 1 Alexander Zverev, for a chance to advance to the semi-finals. The other participating teams include Austria, the Czech Republic, Canada, Italy, South Korea, and Spain.
