Arsenal Upset by Fleetwood Town in Carabao Cup After Dowman Red Card

Arsenal suffered a surprising exit from the Carabao Cup, falling to Fleetwood Town in the last-16 after a 1-1 draw in normal time followed by a penalty shootout defeat. The match was further complicated by a red card shown to 16-year-old winger Max Dowman.

Dowman, making his second start of the season, was dismissed after reacting to a challenge in the second half. Manager Mikel Arteta expressed his disappointment with the player's reaction, stating it was something they had discussed prior to the match. "You have to remember he is 16 years of age, he's a kid," commented former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson. "He probably feels he should be playing more, he gets the chance tonight, isn't doing too great. It's an old fashioned tackle."

The incident occurred after Fleetwood had taken a surprise lead, with Arsenal eventually equalizing despite dominating possession and registering numerous shots. The Premier League champions were unable to secure a victory in normal time, ultimately losing 5-3 on penalties.

Arsenal fielded an experimental side, featuring several young players alongside seasoned internationals. Despite bringing on established stars such as Martin Odegaard and Bruno Guimaraes from the bench, the team struggled to assert dominance.

This loss marks a continuation of Arsenal's struggles in the League Cup, which they have not won in 33 years. Previous exits include defeats to Bradford City in 2012 and Sheffield Wednesday in 2015.

The team's options on the wing are further strained by injuries to Bukayo Saka, Christos Tzolis, and Noni Madueke. With Saka sidelined for approximately six weeks, Tzolis working towards a return, and Madueke also unavailable, Arsenal faces a challenging period for their upcoming match against Liverpool.
