Arsenal's Max Dowman Scores Twice in Carabao Cup, Manager Urges Caution

Arsenal teenager Max Dowman showcased his talent with two goals in the 4-2 Carabao Cup victory over Ipswich Town on Wednesday. The 16-year-old, who played 13 times last season, has seen limited first-team minutes this campaign, but his performance at Portman Road has put him in contention for more opportunities.

Manager Mikel Arteta, however, stressed the importance of handling Dowman's progression carefully. "He is 16 years old and we have to be really cautious," Arteta stated. "We don't want to stop him, we don't want to put the brakes on him, we need to develop him and we are fully aware what he needs. He will have opportunities."

Dowman's first goal was a solo effort, weaving past defenders before finding the net. Arteta described the player as "unbelievable, unpredictable, so fluid, so nice to watch." His second goal demonstrated composure as he calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner.

Dowman becomes only the second 16-year-old to score two goals in a single game for a Premier League side in all competitions, matching Wayne Rooney's feat for Everton against Wrexham in the League Cup in 2002.

Last season, Dowman broke several records, becoming the youngest ever Champions League player at 15, Arsenal's youngest starter, and the Premier League's youngest starter, goalscorer, and title winner. He scored one goal in 13 appearances, a strike against Everton that was voted Arsenal's goal of the season. He recently finished his GCSEs and has left school to concentrate on his football career.

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp praised Dowman's abilities, saying, "He is a wonderful player who will be able to do everything in the game." He added, "Just give him time and how they are handling him is perfect. What you don't want to do is not give him the amount of game time he needs. He is an elite player."

Breaking into the current Arsenal first team, which has won all seven of its games this season across four competitions, presents a significant challenge. Dowman was an unused substitute in four of those matches and not involved in the other two before playing the full 90 minutes against Ipswich. The regular attacking quartet has been Bukayo Saka, Christos Tzolis, Martin Odegaard, and Kai Havertz.

Teammate Mikel Merino commented, "He's an unbelievable talent. He will be a star in the future if he keeps his eyes and ears open and keeps learning. He's just 16 so he needs a lot of coaching, especially tactically. But I can't take anything away from him. He's always keen to learn. We'll keep helping him."

Former England defender Conor Coady called Dowman a "real superstar" and noted the benefit of his development under Arteta's guidance. "A 16-year-old boy should not be doing this. He has got no better manager than Arteta to look after him. You want him to be looked after properly. If he plays every game at this age, he won't be scoring goals like this."

Dowman's performance also comes as highly-rated 15-year-old striker JJ Gabriel is reportedly nearing a departure from Manchester United. Gabriel had been expected to debut in Manchester United's Carabao Cup tie against Brighton, which could prevent him from challenging the record for the three youngest players to score in the League Cup for a Premier League side, a list that currently includes Cesc Fabregas, Dowman, and Jack Wilshere, all of whom played for Arsenal.
