Arsenal is reportedly targeting Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa, a move that has prompted questions among fans given the club's existing defensive options. Manager Mikel Arteta appears keen to enhance squad depth ahead of a demanding season that will include defending their Premier League title and competing in the Champions League.
Despite having a seemingly strong starting backline on paper, which includes William Saliba and Gabriel, Arsenal's 2023-24 campaign was marked by numerous injuries. The team played 63 games across all competitions, reaching the Champions League final and the Carabao Cup final, highlighting the need for robust squad depth to manage player fitness and fatigue.
Arteta has emphasized the need for the club to be "very ambitious, very fast, and very smart" in their recruitment to build upon their recent success. Last summer, Arsenal invested approximately £250 million, and the potential acquisition of Konsa would add to this summer's outlay, which has already surpassed £150 million.
According to Transfermarkt, Arsenal's current squad is valued at £1.19 billion, reflecting the significant quality and depth already present. When discussing the ideal squad size, Arteta noted that it depends on various factors, including player ability, historical performance, injury records, and versatility.
"Twenty-two outfield players and three goalkeepers of what is enough, or maybe you know more," Arteta stated when asked about the perfect number of players. "You need to understand what happened in the previous season, the injury record of those players, the versatility of certain players. But I'm sure we're going to hit the right number to have a bit of both a lot of competition with the right level of cooperation in the team and everybody feeling important."
The pursuit of Konsa underscores Arsenal's strategy to ensure they have sufficient cover and competition across all positions to sustain challenges on multiple fronts throughout the season.
