Arsenal Face Significant Blow as Bukayo Saka Faces Extended Layoff
The forward sustained a quadriceps injury against Bayern Munich, with initial assessments suggesting a minimum six-week absence.
Arsenal's title challenge has been dealt a significant blow with the news that forward Bukayo Saka could be sidelined for up to eight weeks. Saka sustained a quadriceps injury during Arsenal's Champions League tie against Bayern Munich on Wednesday, forcing him off the pitch. Early examinations indicate a lengthy absence, potentially impacting both Arsenal's Premier League campaign and England's international fixtures.
Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta confirmed that further scans and specialist opinions are required to fully assess the severity of the injury. "When a player has to walk off the pitch, he is struggling to walk without any pain, and is restricted to movement; it is not a good sign," Arteta stated. "He's got another MRI as there was quite a lot of fluid in the area so it was quite difficult to understand the extent of the injury. We will know more tomorrow."
The 25-year-old will miss Arsenal's upcoming Premier League match against Everton. This absence is particularly concerning for Arsenal, who are currently in a tight race for the league title, trailing leaders Manchester City. Saka has been a pivotal player for the Gunners, but this latest injury adds to a history of fitness concerns.
Saka has experienced previous fitness issues, including an Achilles injury in March that saw him miss seven games for Arsenal and the March international break. He also dealt with hamstring problems in the 2024-25 campaign, which required surgery and kept him out for 101 days. Despite these setbacks, he made 49 appearances last season as Arsenal secured the Premier League title. He also had a hip injury in January that caused him to withdraw from a match in the warm-up.
The recurring injuries raise questions about Saka's overall robustness, even as he has been adapting his game to become a more consistent goalscorer, netting four goals in 11 appearances this season. Arsenal's options in wide areas have also been impacted by other injuries, including that of new signing Christos Tzolis. This situation leaves Arsenal with limited depth, relying on players like Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze, alongside highly-rated teenager Max Dowman, who has seen limited senior minutes.
