Arsenal Ends Winless Streak with Derby Victory Over Tottenham

Arsenal ended a five-match winless run in the Women's Super League with a hard-fought victory against rivals Tottenham Hotspur. The 2-1 win, secured by an Alessia Russo penalty, eases pressure on manager Renee Slegers and provides a much-needed boost in confidence.

Before the match, Arsenal found themselves in the lower half of the table, trailing Tottenham by four points and leaders Manchester City by twelve. With their title aspirations diminished, Slegers had been facing consistent scrutiny regarding her future. A defeat against Spurs could have proven critical.

The team displayed visible nerves in a disjointed first half, marked by misplaced passes and sloppy errors. Tottenham took the lead through Cathinka Tandberg, but Georgia Stanway quickly equalized with a powerful strike just four minutes later.

"I just gave constructive and tactical things that could help us to get the win, and remind us about the fight and intensity on the pitch," Slegers said of her half-time team talk. "It was a real derby. The team were in a good place and were finding solutions themselves. It was just constructive messaging."

Arsenal emerged as a more dominant force in the second half, increasing pressure on Tottenham and ultimately finding the decisive goal. A penalty was awarded when Lisa Baum's shot hit the post, and a subsequent clearance struck the outstretched hand of Spurs defender Ella Morris. Alessia Russo, who had missed a previous opportunity, confidently converted the spot-kick past goalkeeper Lize Kop.

The jubilant celebrations from Russo and her teammates, including a sprint towards the away supporters, were replicated by England teammate Leah Williamson at full-time. Slegers allowed her players to celebrate with the fans, acknowledging the importance of the win and the connection with supporters.

"I'm so happy we got it for them. We said we would play for the fans. We played for them and connected with them," Slegers stated. "We sold out the away section, they came in the rain and sang and fought with us throughout the game. At the end, it was scrappy and it was game management and they were all there with us."

Despite the positive outcome, the performance was not without its challenges. Former Arsenal defender Gilly Flaherty noted that the visitors were "causing their own problems" in an unconvincing first half. The team had to rely on a controversial refereeing decision to secure the victory.

Slegers explained the decision to abandon the team's usual post-match huddle in favor of celebrating with fans. "The fans were on our minds. We wanted to play for something bigger, not only for ourselves. That is always a balance," she said. "Actions speak louder than words. There was not much more talking to do so we just wanted to celebrate with them."

An Arsenal fan interviewed at half-time expressed frustration, stating, "It's 1-1 but Arsenal look very nervy in and out of possession. Another week, another formation, another different starting XI. All feels so desperate and out of control." Slegers acknowledged this sentiment, adding, "We had a run of games where results haven't been good enough. It was frustrating for everyone. This will definitely energize us."

Arsenal is now set to embark on a busy period, with a Women's Champions League match against Benfica approaching. The team has several home games in November and a trip to Barcelona, providing opportunities to build momentum. While the WSL title race is out of reach, securing a top-three finish is crucial for qualification in European competition next season.

"We need to back this up in the next couple of games. There were some really good things for us on the pitch," Slegers concluded. "We want to be more consistent but this was a really good step. It's positive energy we want to capitalize on, but it's only a step."
