A security operation involving armed police caused significant travel disruptions at the European Championships in Birmingham on Saturday night, impacting athletes including gold medalist Amy Hunt.

The incident led to the arrest of a man in his thirties on suspicion of fraud, according to organizers. The presence of armed officers at the Alexander Stadium in the latter stages of the evening session resulted in the cancellation of six medal ceremonies and delays of up to two hours for spectator and athlete transport.

Buses carrying competitors, staff, and fans, including the Team GB 4x100m relay quartet that had just won gold, were subject to searches. West Midlands Police confirmed the arrested individual remained in custody as of Sunday morning.

Championship organizers issued a statement acknowledging the delays and thanking attendees for their patience. "Championship transport was suspended until the necessary security measures had been carried out while West Midlands Police arrested a man in his thirties on suspicion of fraud," the statement read. "The safety and wellbeing of our spectators, athletes, workforce and the wider Championships’ family will always be our first priority."

Further information regarding the postponed medal ceremonies was expected on Sunday. Amy Hunt was scheduled to compete in the 4x100m mixed relay on Sunday, potentially seeking her fourth gold medal of the championships.
