Arbeloa Urges Focus on Club Amidst Fulham's Winless Run
Fulham head coach Alvaro Arbeloa deflects pressure regarding his future, emphasizing the collective need for a Premier League victory.
Fulham head coach Alvaro Arbeloa stated that the attention should be on the club, its players, and supporters rather than his own position as the team continues its search for a first Premier League win this season. Fulham currently sits at the bottom of the league table with two points after securing two draws and suffering four defeats in their opening six matches.
As Fulham prepares to host Hull City at Craven Cottage on Saturday, the 43-year-old Spaniard faces mounting pressure. Despite reports suggesting that another loss could lead to his dismissal, Arbeloa described the week as "normal."
"It is not about me, it is about the club, the players and the supporters," Arbeloa said. "They are looking for the reward and looking for a game where they can get a win for the supporters, they deserve it because of their support. It is important for all of us."
Fulham has come close to securing victories in recent matches. Last weekend, they conceded two late goals against Ipswich Town after taking a second-half lead through Ryan Sessegnon. Before the international break, a last-gasp deflected goal by Matheus Cunha denied them a win against Manchester United.
Arbeloa, who arrived at Fulham in the summer on a three-year contract to replace Marco Silva, previously had a brief interim spell as head coach for Real Madrid. His tenure in English football has been disappointing thus far, although the team has advanced to the last 16 of the Carabao Cup, with a home tie against Crystal Palace scheduled for later this month.
When asked about player support, Arbeloa referenced performances against Ipswich, Manchester United, and a 0-0 draw at Anfield against Liverpool. "For me, we need to try to keep that level for 90 minutes, that is important," he stated. He also noted the players' commitment and focus during training sessions.
Following the Hull City match, Arbeloa's Fulham is scheduled to face Coventry City, marking their third consecutive game against a promoted side. Arbeloa acknowledged that his methods and treatment of certain players have drawn surprise from within the squad, but ultimately, results will determine his fate. The club's director of football operations, Tony Khan, is reportedly keen for the appointment to be successful. Arbeloa's appointment was considered a gamble by Fulham and Khan, given his limited experience beyond a short interim role at Real Madrid.
