Antonelli Wins US Grand Prix, Edges Closer to F1 Title
Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli secured victory at the Circuit of the Americas, but will have to wait at least until the next race to clinch his maiden Formula 1 championship.
Kimi Antonelli captured his ninth victory of the season at the United States Grand Prix, extending his lead in the Formula 1 driver standings. The Mercedes driver triumphed at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, finishing more than 13 seconds ahead of Charles Leclerc, who came in second.
Antonelli, starting from pole position, controlled the race from the outset. He built a significant gap on the opening lap, leaving rivals like Max Verstappen, who finished third, behind.
Despite the dominant win, Antonelli's path to his first Formula 1 championship was not concluded in Austin. The precise points threshold needed for him to secure the title depends on the final schedule for the season, with potential uncertainties surrounding the races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi.
Should the original schedule hold, Antonelli needed to leave Austin with a 125-point lead. If the schedule is reduced, with Imola potentially serving as a replacement for a canceled event, he would need a 100-point advantage. His lead after the US Grand Prix puts him on the brink of making history as the youngest F1 champion.
Antonelli's Mercedes teammate, George Russell, endured a difficult race. Starting sixth, Russell ran off track and incurred a five-second penalty for contact with Oscar Piastri, ultimately finishing eighth. This result keeps him theoretically in the championship fight, but the margin is slim.
Antonelli now needs to finish ninth or higher in the next race in Mexico City to secure the championship, provided his closest rivals do not win. His father, Marco Antonelli, celebrated the significant step towards the title, with his son expected to be crowned champion either in Mexico or the following race in Brazil.
