Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli claimed victory at the Spanish Grand Prix, a result heavily influenced by a virtual safety car period that saw McLaren's Lando Norris lose a commanding lead. Norris, who had started from pole position, was comfortably ahead when the virtual safety car was deployed on lap 15.

The timing proved detrimental for Norris, as he had already passed the pit exit when the caution was called. This allowed Antonelli and Red Bull's Max Verstappen to pit under the virtual safety car, gaining significant time. By the time Norris reached the pits on the subsequent lap, the caution period had ended, and a slow stop further hampered his race, dropping him to fifth place. He was ultimately able to recover to finish third on the demanding track where overtaking is notoriously difficult.

Antonelli's win marks his eighth victory in 14 races this season, extending his championship lead. He is now 81 points ahead of his Mercedes teammate George Russell, who finished fifth due to a complex strategy. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton retired early from the race with brake failure, leaving him 101 points behind Antonelli.

The new Madring circuit, designed for the race, presented challenges for overtaking despite its modern layout. Norris's misfortune with the virtual safety car denied him a likely third victory of the season, while Antonelli's fortune coincided with his strong on-track performances, solidifying his dominance in the championship.
