Antonelli Secures US Grand Prix Pole on Potential Title-Clinching Weekend
Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli will become world champion Sunday if he wins and other results fall his way.
Kimi Antonelli claimed pole position for the United States Grand Prix, a pivotal moment on a weekend where he could secure his first world championship. The Mercedes driver edged out Red Bull's Max Verstappen by 0.179 seconds, with Verstappen's teammate Isack Hadjar qualifying third. Charles Leclerc of Ferrari and Lewis Hamilton rounded out the top five.
Antonelli, 20, expressed his delight after securing his first pole position since July's Belgian Grand Prix. "It feels good to be back," he said.
He can clinch the world title on Sunday if he wins the race and his teammate George Russell finishes outside the points or lower than eighth, and Hamilton finishes lower than fourth. Hamilton qualified fifth, and Russell will start sixth.
The pole position came as a surprise, as Ferrari had dominated the practice sessions, and Verstappen had shown strong pace through the second part of qualifying. Antonelli's engineer, Peter Bonnington, noted that Antonelli's first lap in the final qualifying session was sufficient for pole.
Verstappen, who had been fourth quickest in Q2 on used tires, struggled with grip in the final session. "Q3 was not good," Verstappen stated. "I just didn't have a nice balance. No mistakes, just not enough grip. But if it's still a P2, I take it."
Antonelli acknowledged the challenge ahead, stating, "We got pole so we will try to win tomorrow but Max has been very quick and Isack did an incredible job so it is not going to be easy." He added, "We try to get a good start and hopefully lead into Turn One and try to set the pace, even though it's going to be very tight."
