Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes secured pole position for the Belgian Grand Prix, significantly outperforming his championship rival George Russell, who qualified fourth. Antonelli, who leads the championship standings by 25 points over Russell, posted a time that was 0.317 seconds faster than Red Bull's Max Verstappen.
Verstappen, a four-time champion, utilized a slipstream from his Red Bull teammate Isack Hadjar, a tactic that contributed an estimated 0.3 seconds to his lap time. Despite this assistance, Verstappen was unable to match Antonelli's pace. McLaren's Lando Norris qualified third but will face a 10-place grid penalty due to exceeding engine component allowances. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton secured fifth and sixth positions, respectively.
Antonelli has demonstrated strong performance throughout the weekend, having topped practice sessions. This marks his sixth pole position in ten races this season. Following his qualifying run, Antonelli conveyed birthday wishes to his father, Marco.
"Q1, I felt a bit lost because the wind picked up and the balance was a bit on the edge but the session came to us," Antonelli stated. "I changed a little bit the front wing flap for Q2. Q3 was good because we did a decent first lap and second lap I found a lot of time. It was a good lap."
George Russell acknowledged a persistent issue with straight-line speed affecting his performance since the Silverstone race. "We thought we had found the problem, it wasn't the problem and then we thought it was a driving style and it wasn't the solution," Russell explained. "But I feel after looking at the data, I feel positive with the job I did. If you just take the corners, I did a very good job. Battling against Kimi is very tough in a fair fight. When we are in this situation, it's impossible. The team are working so hard to try and pinpoint what it is. It can be a million things."
Red Bull's strategy to use Hadjar for a tow was a response to Hadjar's own 30-place grid penalty for exceeding engine limits. Verstappen commented on the tow's benefit, stating, "It was definitely helping me otherwise I would not be standing here, it would be P6 or something." He added, "Isack, knowing he had a penalty and would be starting at the back, he helped me. I will be looking in my mirrors tomorrow. But we are happy to be on the front row with how we executed it as a team."
Antonelli's qualifying lap places him in a strong position for the Belgian Grand Prix, extending his championship lead with his consistent high performance this season.
