Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli secured pole position for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on Saturday, outpacing rivals including those from Ferrari and his own teammate George Russell. Antonelli's performance in qualifying dealt another blow to Russell's title aspirations.
Antonelli expressed some pre-lap stress, noting he typically dislikes being the first driver out for a final run. However, he successfully improved his time by nearly three-tenths of a second on his last lap, placing him out of reach of his competitors.
"The last lap was very tidy. It came all together," Antonelli said. "It was very tricky with the winds because it was very gusty, unpredictable, and to build the car to pole was very satisfying."
Antonelli had already extended his championship lead with a victory in the sprint race. His starting position for the main Grand Prix presents Russell with a significant challenge as he aims for his first win at his home race.
