Angharad Evans continued Scotland's success at the Commonwealth Games with a dramatic victory in the women's 100m breaststroke final on Sunday evening. Her win brought Scotland's gold medal tally to four.
Earlier in the day, Reuben Ward secured a historic gold in the men's all-round gymnastics event, marking the first time a Scottish athlete has won this title. This followed Scotland's strong performance on Friday night, where Duncan Scott and Faye Rogers also achieved gold medals in swimming.
In the 100m breaststroke final at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre, the 23-year-old Evans, who entered the race as the favorite, had to push hard to narrowly defeat Aimee Canny of South Africa by a margin of 0.12 seconds in a close finish.
This marks the first major international title for Evans, who was born in Cambridge. She is also expected to be a strong contender for a second gold medal in the 200m breaststroke final later in the week.
"It's just so special to win this title in front of a home crowd," Evans stated. She qualified to represent Scotland under residency rules, having trained at the University of Stirling for the past three years. "Scotland has given me everything as a swimmer and I just wanted to give something back. The crowd was amazing and it definitely gives you something extra wearing this suit. It was a stressful finish but I always back myself to get the touch in those situations."
Duncan Scott, who won gold on Friday, was unable to add to his medal count in the men's 4x200m freestyle final, where his Scottish teammates George Smith, Matt Ward, and Evan Jones finished in fourth place.
Australia also had a successful night in the pool, claiming five gold medals, including a 50m freestyle victory by Olympic champion Cam McEvoy.
