Giants star offensive tackle Andrew Thomas demonstrated his characteristic calm during a recent training camp practice, even as rookie defensive lineman Abdul Carter brought a high level of intensity. Carter, a whirlwind of activity, frequently engaged Thomas, attempting to gain an edge during drills at The Greenbrier.
Despite Carter's vocal and aggressive approach, Thomas remained unfazed. "That’s all defenders," Thomas said. "They make one play and they’re the best. You do it a second time, you’re All-Pro. I’m all about consistency. I love the competition. I don’t have to say much. I just speak by how I play."
Giants head coach Jim Harbaugh observed the dynamic, initially anticipating some back-and-forth but quickly realizing Thomas's reserved nature. "Probably Abdul’s talking more, and Andrew is just kind of looking at him," Harbaugh noted.
The practice featured intense one-on-one matchups. Thomas successfully stopped an inside rush by Carter, but on the subsequent play, Carter beat Thomas around the edge and later tipped a pass. Carter's relentless pursuit was evident, as he pushed hard to simulate a sack, even running into an assistant coach during one energetic play.
For Carter, a rookie whose promising talent has been marked by immaturity, this level of competition is a step in his development. As the No. 3 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, Carter possesses undeniable talent. Thomas, a seasoned veteran, acknowledged Carter's abilities, noting, "He can work edges really well. Part of that is he’s not a super tall rusher. He’s real low to the ground but he also has good change of direction so you can’t just anticipate which way he’s going to go."
Harbaugh expressed satisfaction with Carter's performance in the early practices, highlighting the benefit of the competition. "He’s going against a really good tackle too," Harbaugh said. "Those guys are making each other better. I just appreciate that kind of competition."
Thomas is returning to form after missing the entire 2025 training camp and the first two games of the regular season due to Lisfranc foot surgery. When healthy, he is considered one of the league's elite left tackles.
"Well, Andrew, he’s special," Harbaugh stated. "He’s a one-of-a-kind, elite football player. Elite left tackle in every way. He’s in phenomenal shape. He’s moving great. He has worked super, super hard. He’s healthy. He’s ready to roll and looks really good."
Thomas's effectiveness often lies in his understated dominance, as he tends to neutralize pass rushers rather than engaging in overt displays. His professional demeanor, which he likens to wearing a business suit, extends to his on-field presence. Thomas stated that he only retaliates if an opponent commits a "cheap" foul, preferring to let his play speak for itself and noting that his quiet demeanor can be frustrating for opponents.
