Andrew Flintoff has stepped down as the head coach of the England Lions, citing a desire to focus on his commitments with the Australian Big Bash franchise, the Sydney Thunder.

Flintoff, 48, was appointed to lead the Lions in September 2024. He had initially planned to leave the Lions' tour of South Africa early to join the Thunder, his first overseas T20 coaching role. However, he has now decided to depart the national setup entirely.

"Unfortunately I've made the decision to step away from my role with the Lions," Flintoff stated. "Not only have I enjoyed my time having the opportunity to work with the best young cricketers in the country, but have taken great pride in seeing them develop."

He expressed gratitude to the coaches and staff for their dedication and support. "I can't wait to get started with the Thunder later in the year and see where coaching takes me."

During his tenure with the Lions, Flintoff also coached the Northern Superchargers men's team in The Hundred for two seasons, achieving fourth and third-place finishes. He was not retained for the 2026 season after the franchise's ownership changed.

Before leading the Lions, Flintoff informally assisted with England's white-ball coaching.

His final assignment with the England Lions involved a tour of England by South Africa A in May and June, where the Lions lost both four-day matches and two of three 50-over games.

Ed Barney, England and Wales Cricket Board men's performance director, acknowledged Flintoff's impact. "Fred has helped to transform the Lions environment into a programme that has had a major impact on young players," Barney said. "Coaches have also flourished alongside him, whether early in their coaching journey or with decades of experience, and he has consistently maximised the expertise around the group. We wish him the best in the next stage of his coaching career and look forward to a time he returns to the English game."

Mike Yardy will take over as head coach for the upcoming Professional County Club Select XI match, which serves as Pakistan's warm-up before their Test series against England. The fixture is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, August 12, in Beckenham. Additionally, the Lions will serve as opposition for Sri Lanka's two T20 warm-up matches at the start of their limited-overs tour of England in September.
