New York Knicks center Andre Drummond has explained his decision to not participate in the team's championship ring ceremony. Drummond, who joined the Knicks in the offseason, opted to stay in the locker room during the pre-game festivities on Tuesday, feeling he had not yet earned the right to celebrate the previous season's championship.
"I want to be able to experience that because I was a part of it. I let those guys have their moment," Drummond told SNY Knicks following the team's season opener. "I feel like I've got to earn it. I don't want to experience something that I wasn't there for."
Despite his absence from the ceremony, Drummond received a warm reception from the Madison Square Garden crowd once the game began. Fans chanted his name, which he described as "pretty surreal" and something that gives him "chills."
Drummond's gesture of respect for his teammates' past achievements resonated with the fanbase, drawing widespread praise.
However, the Knicks were unable to secure a victory in their season opener, falling to the Philadelphia 76ers with a score of 106-100. LeBron James contributed seven assists, 14 points, and nine rebounds for the 76ers, while Tyrese Maxey led the team with 28 points. For the Knicks, Jalen Brunson scored 21 points, and Karl-Anthony Towns added 19 points and 12 rebounds. Drummond led the Knicks' bench scorers with 12 points and a team-high 14 rebounds.
The Knicks are scheduled to play their first road game of the season on Friday against the Boston Celtics.
