James Melton, a 14-year-old freshman at Covenant Christian School, scored his first career touchdown during the team's season opener last Friday. Melton, who plays with a prosthetic leg, caught a pass and crossed the goal line in a moment captured on video and shared widely on social media.
After the score, Melton was mobbed by teammates, and the home crowd erupted in celebration. However, the moment was immediately followed by a hit from a rival defender in the end zone. Teammates quickly came to Melton's aid.
Melton was born with a rare condition that led to the amputation of his leg at 22 months old. He learned to walk on a prosthetic four months later and has spent his childhood competing in sports.
Speaking about the touchdown, Melton described the experience as "overwhelming." A clip of the play shared online garnered thousands of views and comments praising his resilience and determination.
