Julian Alvarez sent Argentina into the World Cup semifinals with a long-range strike in the 112th minute against Switzerland. Lautaro Martinez scored again in the final seconds of extra time, solidifying the 3-1 victory.
Alexis Mac Allister also scored for Argentina off a corner kick from Lionel Messi. The win advances La Albiceleste to a semifinal match against England on Wednesday in Atlanta. England defeated Norway 2-1 earlier in the day.
Messi's World Cup scoring streak of nine games ended, but his pursuit of a second World Cup title continues.
The match saw a controversial call in the second half. With the score tied, Switzerland's Dan Ndoye scored in the 67th minute. Shortly after, Argentina's Leandro Paredes received a yellow card for a challenge on Switzerland's Breel Embolo. Upon video review, it was determined that Embolo fell before contact was made, and because Embolo had already received a yellow card earlier in the match, he was sent off, leaving Switzerland to defend with 10 players.
This was the second instance in the tournament where a yellow card was overturned using the "mistaken identity" protocol, which allows the video assistant referee to intervene if the wrong player is shown a yellow or red card.
