Alonso Criticizes Chelsea Players for Lacking 'Competitive Mentality'

Xabi Alonso, manager of Chelsea, has criticized his players for a perceived drop in their "competitive mentality" following a disappointing 3-0 loss to Brentford. The defeat, which saw Chelsea concede three goals in the second half, leaves the team winless in their last three matches heading into the international break. This marks Chelsea's first loss away to Brentford since the latter's return to the Premier League in 2021.

Alonso stated that his team failed to maintain their level of performance for the full 90 minutes, a factor he believes was decisive in the match. "We dropped our consistency and competitive mentality in the second half," Alonso commented after the game. "The small details can be decisive. You don't have to give advantage in these kind of games where they do with little, they get a lot and credit to them."

He acknowledged the difficulty of the task ahead, describing the process of improving the team as ongoing and emphasizing the highly competitive nature of the Premier League. "It's a process and it's still five games in a competitive Premier League where each game is really hard. We knew it was going to be hard, so (the job) is not going to be easy at all."

In contrast, Brentford manager Keith Andrews highlighted his team's resilience and determination. "We've shown different kind of attributes in the last few weeks where we've had to dig deep, show real great resilience," Andrews said. He praised his players' focus and the growing connection between the team, fans, and the club. "I felt there was a performance bubbling; I could see it in the players' eyes over the last couple of days. The approach has been really focused and I thought in the second half we showed exactly what we are."
