Alexis Lafreniere Shows Signs of Breakout Season for Rangers

Alexis Lafrenière is off to a promising start for the New York Rangers this season, notching seven goals and 10 points in his first eight games. This performance has signaled a potential breakout for the 25-year-old forward, who was the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2020.

Lafrenière's longtime trainer, Stéphane Dubé, who also served as an NHL conditioning coach, has noted a change in the player's approach. Dubé, who previously worked with Sidney Crosby during his rookie year, has spoken with Lafrenière about managing pressure and expectations. Unlike Crosby's immediate standout rookie season, Lafrenière has yet to achieve a 100-point campaign or Rookie of the Year honors, with his highest goal tally at 28 and point total at 57 through his first six seasons.

However, Lafrenière has consistently expressed a belief in his potential to become a 50-goal scorer and has dedicated himself to his training. "I want to win in New York," Lafrenière told Dubé this summer, signaling his commitment to the team and the city. This sentiment appears to be translating onto the ice.

Dubé observed that Lafrenière is "playing like he means it" this season. His strong performance continues a promising trend that began in the final 30 games of the previous season. The narrative surrounding Lafrenière has shifted from disappointment to anticipation of a potential superstar emergence. "He wants to perform because he’s a performer. He wants to be that guy," Dubé commented, highlighting Lafrenière's drive and desire to be a key player for the Rangers.
