Alexis Lafrenière's Goal Streak Fuels Rangers' Early Success

The New York Rangers are off to a strong start, building a defensive identity centered around a physical forechecking scheme. Despite the absence of goaltender Igor Shesterkin, the team has found success on home ice and seen contributions across the lineup. A key factor in their early surge has been the offensive resurgence of forward Alexis Lafrenière.

Lafrenière, the first overall pick in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, has blossomed into the offensive force the Rangers envisioned. He enters Thursday night's matchup against the New Jersey Devils as the NHL's leading goal scorer, currently riding a career-best four-game goal streak that has seen him tally seven goals. This offensive output is supported by his strong performance in expected goals, ranking seventh in the league through eight games.

His recent performance includes a two-goal effort against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday, where he opened the scoring early and later beat Andrei Vasilevskiy on a breakaway. Lafrenière's effectiveness is amplified by his linemates, J.T. Miller and Tye Kartye, whose relentless forechecking creates scoring opportunities. The trio has outscored opponents 4-0 at five-on-five play and controls a significant share of expected goals when on the ice together.

Kartye, in particular, has been instrumental, assisting on both of Lafrenière's goals against the Lightning. His ability to win puck battles and deliver precise passes has enabled Lafrenière's enhanced offensive production. This chemistry has contributed to a more robust version of Lafrenière's game, building on a strong finish to the previous season where he recorded 14 goals and 28 points in his final 27 games.

The Devils, the Rangers' upcoming opponent, have struggled defensively, allowing an average of 3.67 goals per game and starting the season with a 3-3 record.

Despite Lafrenière's impressive run, oddsmakers have priced him at +240 odds to score on Thursday. This presents a value opportunity for bettors looking to capitalize on his current form and streak.
