Alexi Lalas, a prominent former player and current commentator, has called for U.S. Soccer to dismiss head coach Mauricio Pochettino following the men's national team's 4-1 loss to Belgium in the World Cup Round of 16. Lalas expressed his belief that Pochettino's cycle with the team has concluded.
Despite a strong performance in the group stage and a win against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32, the team's performance against Belgium fell short of expectations. Key players like Christian Pulisic were largely ineffective before an injury sidelined him, and Folarin Balogun, despite being cleared to play after a controversial red card suspension, managed only one shot.
Lalas suggested that a better showing against Belgium, even in an anticipated quarterfinal match against Spain, would have warranted consideration for Pochettino's contract extension. However, the manner of the defeat, described by Lalas as an "abject failure," necessitates a change in leadership.
"When it comes to Mauricio Pochettino, you had one job," Lalas told talkSPORT. "And it was the game against Belgium. You win that game, then you're in some rarefied air. And it's not gravy but let's be honest, you're playing against Spain. And you take your chances, you're back in an underdog type of role."
He added, "So I think that they [US Soccer] move on. I believe he's had a good time, but you had one job, and you blew it. And, you know, you live and die by that."
Lalas characterized the loss as a failure not just in outcome but in the team's overall presentation. "It's one thing to go out to Belgium, it's another thing to go out in the way they went out, especially with the way that they looked through the tournament. I don't think the confidence and excitement was misplaced for this team, but they picked the worst possible day to play their worst possible game. It's obviously on Mauricio Pochettino and these players."
He acknowledged that the team's prior successes were not entirely negated but noted that the disappointing exit has left many supporters "shaking their head." Lalas indicated that an inquiry into the team's performance is underway.
Pochettino was appointed U.S. MNT head coach two years ago, having previously managed Tottenham Hotspur, Paris Saint-Germain, and Chelsea. U.S. Soccer had reportedly discussed a contract extension with Pochettino prior to the World Cup, with decisions deferred until after the tournament. Following the loss to Belgium, Pochettino declined to comment on his future, stating, "Now is not a moment to talk about that. I think now is a moment to see, to assess the tournament. You know, I'm sure in the next weeks we can start to talk if [US Soccer] wants to talk."
