Alex Ovechkin Reveals Origin of His Coca-Cola Bench Habit

Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin has explained the origin of his well-documented habit of drinking Coca-Cola during games. While most athletes opt for water or sports drinks, Ovechkin has famously turned to soda for energy.

Ovechkin, who recently played in the final home opener of his career, shared the story after the Capitals' 5-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins. He stated that the practice began with a trainer in his native Russia.

"A long story, but one of my trainers who I work with back in Russia told me — he was a marathon runner — and he said, like, 'When you're tired, you're exhausted, you need some sugar in your body or some energy, (and) we always drink Coca-Cola,'" Ovechkin explained. "So, I started drinking (Coke), and I think it worked."

Ovechkin's unconventional approach to in-game nutrition contrasts with the highly structured diets common among modern athletes. Photos have often shown him with items like Subway sandwiches and Flamin' Hot Cheetos.

This preference for Coca-Cola during games is not unique in the NHL. Phil Kessel, who previously held the league record for consecutive regular-season games played, was also known to favor Coke over traditional hydration options.
