Alcaraz Saves Match Points to Give Europe Edge at Laver Cup

Carlos Alcaraz saved two match points before overcoming Taylor Fritz 6-3 4-6 13-11 in a dramatic deciding tie-break at the Laver Cup on Saturday, helping Team Europe establish a 7-5 lead over Team World. The victory was crucial for Alcaraz, who had faced consecutive singles defeats for the first time in 18 months following his exit from the US Open.

"The drop shot is part of my game," Alcaraz stated after securing the win with a delicate drop shot. "In those really close and important moments, I tried to use it because it was a really good weapon for me in this match."

Fritz, who had defeated Alcaraz in last year's competition, maintained a low error count. However, Alcaraz's 42 winners to Fritz's 20 impressed the audience, which included tennis legends Roger Federer and Andy Murray.

Facing match point at 8-9 in the tie-break, Alcaraz delivered an ace and then utilized a drop shot to fend off a second match point. He clinched the victory on his third match point when Fritz was unable to return another precise drop shot.

Earlier in the day, Team World had shown signs of gaining momentum. Alex de Minaur came back from a set down to defeat Alexander Zverev 2-6 7-6 (7-5) 11-9, and American debutant Learner Tien secured a victory over Flavio Cobolli 6-3 2-6 10-7.

Following Alcaraz's singles triumph, Zverev partnered with Casper Ruud to win a doubles match 6-4 7-6 (9-7) against Alexander Bublik and Brandon Nakashima, maintaining Europe's lead heading into the final day of the tournament.

Match wins on Sunday are worth three points, and the first team to reach 13 points will win the Laver Cup. Europe is aiming for their sixth title, while the defending champions, Team World, are seeking their third.
