Alan Shearer Criticizes Tottenham's Summer Spending Amidst Poor League Performance

Alan Shearer has voiced strong criticism of Tottenham Hotspur's summer transfer window, accusing the club of overspending on new acquisitions and questioning the ability of the players brought in. The pundit's comments come as Tottenham languishes at the bottom of the Premier League table after a challenging start to the season.

Spurs reportedly spent approximately £330 million on several players, including Sandro Tonali (£100m), Mateus Fernandes (£85m), Savio (£85m), Jan Paul van Hecke (£52m), and Tosin Adarabioyo (£7m). Despite this significant investment, the team has managed to secure only two points from their opening five matches.

Shearer expressed his doubts about the value of the signings in a statement to Betfair, noting that while manager Roberto De Zerbi may have identified these players, the fees paid do not necessarily reflect their abilities. "I'm not sure the fees warrant the ability," Shearer stated, adding that no one would have anticipated the club being in its current league position.

He further elaborated that the club spent "an absolute fortune on them. On everyone, I think." Shearer specifically mentioned Van Hecke, Tonali, and Savio as examples of costly transfers. He emphasized the urgency for Tottenham to improve, stating, "It is a long, long three weeks for Tottenham and they simply have to start winning football games when they are back from the international break."

The pressure is mounting on De Zerbi, who has been tasked with integrating the new signings and turning the team's fortunes around. Following a recent 3-2 defeat to Aston Villa, De Zerbi expressed his deep disappointment with his team's performance, particularly citing defensive errors. "We can’t lose the game in this way, we can’t concede the second goal (a simple ball over the top), we can’t lose balance just because we are losing," he said, highlighting a failure to heed pre-match warnings about Aston Villa's long-ball tactics.

Tottenham's only victory this campaign came against Charlton in the Carabao Cup. The club's current league position marks the first time they have been at the bottom of the Premier League since January 2009. They are also struggling offensively, sitting second-bottom in the league's goalscoring charts, with finishing identified as a key issue.

Former player Steven Gerrard also commented on the team's striking deficiencies, noting the absence of a consistent 20-goal-a-season striker. Tottenham's sole natural striker, Dominic Solanke, has scored only 12 Premier League goals in two full seasons. Adding to the concern, the club sold promising young striker Will Lankshear to Middlesbrough for a fee that could rise to £20m, and he has since scored eight goals in ten games for his new club.

Shearer, who had initially predicted a top-six finish for Tottenham, now doubts whether that will be achievable. He did, however, suggest that the team might draw parallels with Aston Villa's previous season, when they recovered from a poor start to qualify for Europe. Despite the current difficulties, Shearer believes Tottenham has enough quality to avoid relegation but acknowledges that "there's a massive amount of work to be done at Spurs."

Tottenham's next fixture after the international break is against Manchester United on October 10.
