Alabama Coach Kalen DeBoer Erupts at Player Over Critical Penalty
A late-game personal foul by Dijon Lee Jr. allowed Georgia to seal its victory over Alabama.
Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Kalen DeBoer was visibly incensed with defensive back Dijon Lee Jr. after a costly personal foul penalty late in the game against No. 2 Georgia. The infraction gave the Bulldogs an automatic first down, allowing them to run out the clock and secure a victory, handing Alabama its first loss of the season.
With just over two minutes remaining and Georgia facing a third-and-2 on its own end of the field, Lee committed a foul by grabbing and striking a Georgia player twice in the face. The penalty gave Georgia the necessary first down to end the game, as Alabama had no timeouts left. Following the play, DeBoer confronted Lee on the sideline, with reports indicating the coach told the player he had "just cost us the damn game."
Earlier in the fourth quarter, Alabama may have been denied a defensive pass interference call in the end zone. The ensuing play resulted in a sack of quarterback Keelon Russell out of field goal range, eliminating Alabama's chance to tie the game. Alabama then punted, and the team never regained possession.
The loss dropped Alabama to 5-1 on the season, while Georgia remained undefeated at 6-0.
